The EPC was organized in 1988 by a group of six gentlemen who were passionate about
the safety and effectiveness of ethylene-producing facilities in North America. These men
organized the first Ethylene Producers' Conference in 1988, consisting of one session of a
few papers at an AIChE meeting that year. From that humble beginning, the committee
has grown to include representatives from ninety percent of all companies operating
ethylene-producing facilities in North America and from all the major engineering firms
associated with the design and construction of ethylene plants.

If engineers can effectively estimate the potential reactivity hazards of a process before a process is designed, they can build the necessary safety factors into the unit or plant.
